Nothing harnesses the mental image of the wild west more than that of a gun belt slung low on the hip of cow puncher, law man, or desperado. The Colt Single Action Army (SAA) was the weapon of choice, and the .45 Long Colt was the caliber.
Since then, there have been a lot of really great advancements in firearms and shooting technology and the .45 Long Colt went by the wayside. The .45 LC has been largely relegated to Cowboy Action Shooting matches now, and a new-found application in the mixed-caliber large frame revolvers from Taurus and S&W which mix .410 shotshell and .45 LC interchangeably.
